Roanoke - Company Headquarters
Mack Trucks in Roanoke dates back to the mid 1940's when Henry
Rutrough obtained the franchise and opened Rutrough-Mack at a
location in downtown Roanoke.
In the 1950's Rutrough phased out of the business and Wendell Bailey
and Dick Watson became partners and owners. They moved the business
to the corner of Melrose Avenue and Peters Creek Road. Outgrowing
that location, they moved the dealership in 1979 to its present
location in the community of Hollins, just north of Roanoke.
Mr. Bailey passed away in 1981, and ill health forced Dick Watson to
retire that same year. Frank Ellett became President in 1981 after
acquiring majority ownership. In 1986 the UD franchise was obtained
and in 1988 the dealership was awarded Freightliner. The addition of
these two franchises prompted the name change to Virginia Truck
Center in late 1988. In mid-1992 when the local dealer for GMC
Mid-size trucks went out of business, the franchise was given to
Virginia Truck Center and in late 1993 the company acquired the
building near downtown Roanoke previously housing the International
truck dealership where it began to concentrate on mid-size truck
business from the downtown area. In August, 1997 the Blue Bird
school bus franchise was awarded to Virginia Truck Center.
Richmond (Chester) - Mack Dealership
Mack Trucks first started in Richmond, Virginia in the early 1920's in
a location on Broad Street and operated as a factory branch. In 1981
the factory branch moved to 5115 Commerce Road.
The factory branch became a distributorship in August 1990 when, as
part of a corporate restructuring plan, Mack Trucks sold the branch
to Frank Ellett.
The company moved into a new facility on Route 10 in Chesterfield
County in early 1995. This facility includes new and used truck and
trailer sales and lease, parts and service including truck and
trailer repair, body shop, paint booth and alignment.
Richmond - Freightliner Dealership
In November, 1997 Virginia Truck Center was proud to acquire the
Freightliner franchise for central Virginia through the purchase of
Capital Freightliner located east of the City of Richmond just off
I-64. This facility will also carry the Virginia Truck Center name
and will significantly contribute to our continued state-wide
strength in both the heavy and business class truck market. In
addition to new and used truck sales, this dealership carries a full
line of truck parts and conducts truck mechanical repairs, body,
paint, alignment and frame and also automotive body, paint and frame
repairs.
Harrisonburg (Weyers Cave) - Freightliner Dealership
In December 1999 Virginia Truck Center opened a new Freightliner,
Wabash and Carrier dealership near Harrisonburg at the Weyers Cave
exit (235) on Interstate 81. This state of the art facility features
a Heavy Duty Truck Shop, a Trailer Shop, a Body Shop with a
down-draft paint booth, truck and trailer parts operations, and
sales offices. The addition of our Harrisonburg facility gives
Virginia Truck Center full coverage of the northwestern part of the
state of Virginia and up and down the busy Virginia I-81 corridor.
